How these names are built

Dwarf naming in the fantasy tradition follows two rules: a short, hammer-like given name (one or two hard syllables) followed by a family or clan name that means something material — stone, forge, shield, deep. Real Norse and Germanic naming worked the same way: names were either descriptions (Bjorn = bear) or protections (Hrothgar = famous spear). The bank below mixes 24 given-name roots with 24 clan suffixes for 576 combinations.

How the generator works

Every result is rolled from 24 + 24 word banks — 576 combinations — using your browser's random source. Nothing is typed in by hand and nothing is sent anywhere: the whole tool runs on your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a dwarf name sound right?

Short, heavy syllables and a material surname. Say it while swinging something — if it survives the shout, it works. 24 × 24 = 576 combinations.

Are these names from Tolkien or D&D?

The sound tradition is shared fantasy heritage, but every combination here is generated fresh. Nothing is copied from a published setting.

Can I use one for a female dwarf?

Yes — dwarf naming rarely genders the name itself. Pair any result with a title or a matronymic for extra flavour.
